Oatmeal like no other

Oatmeal is one of the most nutritious food out there. I’ve always loved having oatmeal in the morning although the taste is bland on its own, I usually tended to add a lot of honey and fruits to cover up the taste. Until one day a friend of mine told me about a little trick that makes oatmeal on its own, taste amazing. I’ve been doing my oats this way for a while now and thought I’d share this recipe with you.

This recipe is good if you want to decrease calorie intake, if you are diabetic and want to cut down your sugar intake whilst still eating tasty oatmeal or if you just simply want to enjoy oatmeal on its own.

Ingredients:

  • Oats (I’d recommend getting one of these types of oats as they are least processed, Steal cut oats or rolled oats)

I use this brand of oats

 

  • Puffed Quinoa ( Adding this keeps you full for longer, so definitely recommended if you have a long day ahead with no time to snack)
  • Flax seeds
  • Nuts ( depending on preference, but ensure the nuts are soaked in water beforehand, as the water will neutralize many of the enzyme inhibitors and increase the bioavailability of many nutrients which aids in maximising absorption of nutrients in the body Nutritional Talk)

  • Dried fruits ( depends on preference I used dried figs in the oatmeal and dried cranberries for my toppings)
  • Cinnamon ( also depend on your preferences)
  • coconut oil
  • Milk

 

Note: All the ingredients need to be soaked, excluding milk, all together for a minimum of 24 hours prior to eating. The ingredients soaked can be packed and stocked for up to a year.

Method :

 

  • Get a large Bowl and empty a whole bag of oats and puffed quinoa in it.
  • Chop the dried fruits (amount of dried fruits depending on how sweet you want your oats, considering you will remove these dried fruits make sure to cut them in big slices, moreover avoid dried cranberries or raisins as they are hard to pick out).
  • After adding the dried fruits, add 3 tablespoons of coconut oil, and add 6 tablespoons of cinnamon (depends on preference).
  • After soaking the nuts in water crush them and add them to the bowl.
  • Mix all the ingredients in the bowl and cover with cling film. keep for 24 hours prior to eating.

  • After 24 hours measure a 1/2 a cup of oatmeal and at this point, you have the choice to either pick out the dried fruit or keep them depending on whether you want the extra sweetness or not.
  • Heat a cup of milk plus 1/2 cup of water in a saucepan. Some prefer more water than milk when making their oatmeal, I personally enjoy the taste of the creaminess of milk.
  • Once the milk and water come to a boil lower the heat and add the oatmeal, mixing it till it becomes thick.
  • Leave on the side to cool slightly.
  • Pour into your bowl and decorate it with fruits, dried fruits or nuts.
  • As for the rest of the soaked oats keep in a sealed plastic bag or a glass jar for later use.

Note –  the sweetness of the oats( on their own without additions) depends on how long they are soaked for.

If dried fruits hurt your teeth or you are not a fan of them you can use raw honey (a tsp after cooking the oatmeal), try to avoid processed honey as it has decreased nutritional values
